I mean lets be clear
NASA has done very little with an exceptionally large budget and apparently (im going by their own words..) they destroyed all the primary evidence (blueprints, video, archives etc) of their biggest achievement, meaning they'd have to start again from scratch to replicate it..
Given its own budgets, its financially impossible for NASA to compete with spacex when it comes to future space travel simply because the required NASA budgets to accomplish the same thing today are far beyond anyone would be willing to pay
I'd happily take some trial and error with a private program than spending a literal trillion(s) for similar end results.
