don't know why they'd get mad (the whole "devil's music" thing is what is one reason i'd guess you wouldn't wanna say metal) i'm a metalhead myself and no one in this stream has really gotten mad at the fact i listen to bands like cannibal corpse
if you want some beginner friendly recs in metal i suggest anything nu metal like korn (one of the only bands you can hear the bass in lol), slipknot (slipknot is the way i got into metal), system of a down (aka SOAD), and limp bizkit (listened to them a few times before very recently they are good)

something like Pierce The Veil, i prevail, and just metalcore in general is pretty good if you wanna venture off into the lands of heavier genres and probably if you wanna specifically get into deathcore or maybe even death metal down the road. trad metal and anytihng else that has a harsher tone but still not to the point where it's all grindy and deathy but if you wanna go for the heavy stuff i suggest lorna shore, slaughter to prevail, or any deathcore band out there is be a good pick but again i do not suggest you go into the death stuff head first without knowing much about so start out with the softer stuff than work your way up slowly.

seriously if you are already in some metalcore stuff than might as well check deathcore if you had not yet. if you've already checked out death and feel comfortable with that than i guess go crazy and go stupid testing out some of the other sub genres to test out which are your fav(s). death metal has a pretty wide range of sub genres so check out some there, slamming brutal death metal, brutal death metal, goregrind, deathgrind, tech death metal, slamming deathcore, etc i could go on if i wanted to but sadly i want to live the next 40 years doing stuff that isn't putting 1000 death metal sub genres into one comment. thrash metal is pretty close to death so if you wanna check out some thrash be my guest. anything else behind, in front, and in between you should also check out.

there's a lot of videos out there on the different genres and how they sounds also how to make them and their history. (example: grindcore is fast, short, and chaotic, but if you can bare more than just five second of "RAAAAAAAAAAAHUGAUGAUGARAAAAAAAAAAAH" than doom is slower, longer, and calmer and it's way easier to tell what they are saying.)
