For me, swears and slurs are similar but slightly different categories. While I use slurs like n-word and f-slur, I don't use swears like those you hear all the time

What would make them different

Slurs are more like words that discriminate. Swears are more like regular foul language that some people say often

Aren't they both foul? In the right context swears can be discriminatory. And some black people use the n word in day to day speech as a nickname

It depends on the context and culture. Among Russians like me, using the n word isn't considered offensive either.
