90 of this 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type were made by the American Locomotive Company and Lima Locomotive Works for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad for fast freight services between 1943-1947. They could hit 74 mph with a near 89 car freight train and had roller bearings on all axles and drive rods. Due to wartime restrictions on new designs, they had a resemblance to the Pere Marquette and Nickel Plate Road's own Berkshires, aside from their cowcatchers and headlamps. All were retired by 1957 (that means the got at most 14 years of service), and 12 are preserved, with #2716 undergoing restoration to operational condition
