This hunk of metal on the right is the General Electric GTEL mk3. Developed with the American Locomotive Company, 30 of these giants were made to replace the Union Pacific's Big Boys in the late 50s. They produced 8,500 hp from a gas turbine engine, and was comprised of 3 units; the A unit contained the cab and a 1500 ho diesel engine for use in yards, the b unit had the turbine and generator, and the 3rd unit was a tender holding extra fuel oil. All were retired by 1970, due to increasing oil prices and the EMD DDA40X being ordered (one can be seen on the left corner of the picture). 2 gtels are preserved; #18 in the Illinois railway museum, and #26 (pictured) at the Ogden Railway museum in Ogden, Utah
