With over 1,100 built(not counting passenger variants) between 1972-1986 by GM's Electro-Mototive division, the GP40-2 is among the greatest Diesel locomotives ever made, part of EMD's highly successful General Purpose line, and as the name implies, they were used on anything from medium freight, to switching or even passenger work. If you were to go out today and observe a short-line railroad, you'd likely see one of these working there, or doing switching for a large railroad or even commuter trains in New Jersey.
