My reasoning is he is a knight. Knights typically lead a cavalry formation known as a lance. And Sargent comes from servant, knights can't be servants so lance corporal became the rank.
In the cadian ranking system lance leads a squad but is outranked by a Sargent leading another squad. As in with an average of 3 squads per platoon there is 1 Sargent and 2 lance corporals.
