Many founding fathers where deists, which means they were not sure that Jesus was an incarnation of god, but believed only one God existed. You can follow that God in your own way, which is why the broke from the Church of England that tried to force them to follow God in the Churches' way. It is also why they disentangled state and religion despite believing religion was necessary for the country to function.
