Evolution works with metaphorical islands. Sometimes the whole species is the island so there’s no evolved from left and sometimes the evolved from and evolved to are on separate metaphorical islands so they coexist into the future

How convient..

One that I find intriguing is the human chromosome “island”. The chimpanzees that became humans suddenly had a couple chromosomes fuse in a way that rendered them unable to mate with most of the remaining chimpanzees. Thus we got our “island” and the rest of the chimpanzees got to continue to exist

But yes as for the protohuman links on the human island sometimes the whole island moved and sometimes something a bit more violent happened and none of them survived
