James is a worker drone who used to live in an outpost about 100 miles from Outpost 3 (the place where the main MD cast lives), and lost his parents in a murder drone attack about 2 years before the events of the pilot. He had grown up hearing rumors about the Autobots (the Transformers are like Bigfoot to workers, with no real evidence to prove their existence), and tried to make a beacon to contact the Transformers, although the first test instead attracted a group of 8 murder drones, who ravaged the outpost and killed several people. After the fiasco, he was banished from the colony, and had to walk the 100 miles to Outpost 3, hiding out in ruined vehicles to avoid being spotted. after nearly a week of travel, he was spotted by V, who ended up taking pity on him, and took him to outpost 3. James is a little afraid of Murder Drones, and does his best to avoid them (V is the only exception to this), and he is socially awkward, and doesn't get along well with most of Outpost 3's residents, seen as a crackpot conspiracy theorist
