Why did bicycles had sticks on their wheels at first

The connection of the arm to the center point of a wheel was standard for thousands of years as it was easy to make and nobody wanted to change it

Because the axle was placed in the center of the wheel, meaning it had to have connection to the outer rim of the wheel. However people decided that they don’t like the previous working design and made this pointless change to some new bikes
