About five thousand years before the current Bossfights era, the multiverse was still expanding. Each universe was far from the others, and there was only whitespace in between. However, each universe was growing, and rapidly doing so.
Around three thousand years before the current era, there were shockwaves in a couple of universes, which distorted reality. The cause of these shockwaves? Those universes had expanded into each other, and begun to overlap.
The whitespace between these universes faded, and became a distorted amalgamation of the universes that had collided. The result? Strange creatures, outlandish lifeforms, extreme climates and bizarre geography. But it was still beautiful.
A few years after this “Nexus”, as it was called, formed, scientists found it through telescopes, and became curious. They began developing technology to reach the far edges of their universes, as they could only learn so much from afar. Soon, many multiversal vehicles were invented, but they were only able to go so fast. Many vehicles were sent out, and most perished from starvation, old age, or the many hazards of crossing the universal barrier.
Finally, one scientist made the full trip, and immediately began wreaking havoc on the environment by conducting experiments and killing creatures to study them. However, despite his immoral methods, his research yielded interesting results, which he shared with his home planet, Werther.
First, the creatures didn’t have a standard life cycle. While some DID reproduce sexually, many of them just kind of seemed to.. appear. Secondly, creatures had different forms for different stages of their lives. Their bodies would change drastically between forms. Thirdly, almost every single one of them were intelligent. They could speak, think creatively, mourn each other, and so on.
Finally, all the creatures were magical. They each could manipulate an aspect of reality. Some could control water, from moving it around, to draining it from lifeforms with high water content in their bodies. Some could manipulate light and shadows, and some had psychic abilities, able to move things, or alter another’s mind with only their thoughts.
Before he could uncover any more secrets of this strange place, the scientist was brutally killed by a species of giant undead bees.
Meanwhile, at Werther, the government was worried about attacks from the Nexus and other universes, so they decided to strike first. Needless to say, they started a war.
