About five thousand years before the current Bossfights era, the multiverse was still expanding. Each universe was far from the others, and there was only whitespace in between. However, each universe was growing, and rapidly doing so.

Around three thousand years before the current era, there were shockwaves in a couple of universes, which distorted reality. The cause of these shockwaves? Those universes had expanded into each other, and begun to overlap.

The whitespace between these universes faded, and became a distorted amalgamation of the universes that had collided. The result? Strange creatures, outlandish lifeforms, extreme climates and bizarre geography. But it was still beautiful.

A few years after this “Nexus”, as it was called, formed, scientists found it through telescopes, and became curious. They began developing technology to reach the far edges of their universes, as they could only learn so much from afar. Soon, many multiversal vehicles were invented, but they were only able to go so fast. Many vehicles were sent out, and most perished from starvation, old age, or the many hazards of crossing the universal barrier.

Finally, one scientist made the full trip, and immediately began wreaking havoc on the environment by conducting experiments and killing creatures to study them. However, despite his immoral methods, his research yielded interesting results, which he shared with his home planet, Werther.

First, the creatures didn’t have a standard life cycle. While some DID reproduce sexually, many of them just kind of seemed to.. appear. Secondly, creatures had different forms for different stages of their lives. Their bodies would change drastically between forms. Thirdly, almost every single one of them were intelligent. They could speak, think creatively, mourn each other, and so on.

Finally, all the creatures were magical. They each could manipulate an aspect of reality. Some could control water, from moving it around, to draining it from lifeforms with high water content in their bodies. Some could manipulate light and shadows, and some had psychic abilities, able to move things, or alter another’s mind with only their thoughts.

Before he could uncover any more secrets of this strange place, the scientist was brutally killed by a species of giant undead bees.

Meanwhile, at Werther, the government was worried about attacks from the Nexus and other universes, so they decided to strike first. Needless to say, they started a war.

After 25 years of non-stop multiversal war, four champions of the Nexus brought order. Each one could manipulate reality itself AND was able to completely control a certain aspect of reality. One was a being made of water, bubbles in the shape of a person, their movement fluid and beautiful. Another was a dragon made of pure flames, heat radiating from its presence, bright and powerful. The third was a being whose limbs were made of roots and branches, sturdy and firm. The fourth was mysterious, a shadow, often obscuring their appearance.

These four ended the war and created the Faction System. Creatures were separated into living spaces based on their magic type. Creatures with two magic types could choose which they go by. Small, separate islands were made for those who weren’t content with faction life. In the end, the Nexus was peaceful.

After the war ended, the Four Guardians needed to figure out how to maintain peace. They created an area where all the different creatures could visit, dubbing it the “Unity Zone”. There, new generations arose, and it became a living space. Forests thrived, and small creatures lived comfortably. But it was not enough. The Nexus needed more guardians to protect everyone.

One day, they began recruiting guards. Amongst the recruits, one stood out. He was a rogue egg named Walter who had stumbled upon this place by accident. He was very skilled with swords, and worked as a hired assassin. The First Guardian, the one made of bubbles and water, took him under his wing, teaching him reality warping magic. Walter took on the name “The Scrambler”. He had perfected reality warping magic, and created a new type, which erases matter in an instant. It was very unstable, so he used it by channeling magic through an enchanted sword, which somewhat weakened the effects, but stabilized it.

One day, Walter caught the Fourth Guardian sneaking out of his quarters. The First Guardian was always wary of the Fourth, who was a very suspicious entity. Walter then proceeded to initiate a fight, losing his life in the process. When the other Guardians asked what happened to Walter, the Fourth simply shrugged it off, saying he must’ve gone off on official duty.

The night after his battle with the Scrambler, the Fourth Guardian snuck into the Third’s quarters, killing him in a fight. When the Third died, the Fourth knew he had to kill the others quickly. He fought and killed the Second, then the First. Fortunately each of the first three guardians had managed to release their souls without the Fourth knowing, so they would soon return as new beings.

After this, the fourth created puppets that took on the shape of the other Guardians, fooling many of the creatures in the Nexus, and gaining absolute power over all the lands. Those who knew of the other Guardians’ deaths were patiently waiting for their return. Millennium, after millennium, after millennium..
