Yakuza: like a dragon has a friendship system where you level up bond meters for friends and each side character has their own personal story with you. You have to fill the bond meter every time you want to progress that particular story, and once you level up the friendship, they get more XP when they’re not in the current group! It’s a genius RPG system.
And it got me wondering why Sonic, a game franchise all about making friends, has never done anything like this before. I understand Frontiers was meant to be a fresh start with the classic characters, but they have so many side characters that they never utilize in their games.
