My grandparents literally grew up in the USSR, and my parents were born there too. Besides from that, I spent a while ago studying on communism and its effects. There was no successful communist society ever, all they have is brutal oppression.

The things communists believe in is the abolition of the state, class, and wage labor in favor of the means of production being collectively owned.

Also the 3 categories of communist are libertarian, center, and authoritarian. Authoritarian communists include Leninists and Stalinists. Center communists are usually orthodox Marxist's or left communists. Libertarian communists include anarcho communists and Anarcho syndicalists. I fall into the libertarian category

You know, China started out with the full-blown communist ideology, but now they act like Capitalists in the world economy. Shouldn't that tell you something, that even they didn't stick to their own ideology? (They kept the one-party, totalitarianism form of government, though).
