As an atheist, the first humans were black actually. Migration of humans up north and east caused genetic changes, so the further up north or south u go, the more white people on average theoretically would be. That's why Scandinavians and Japanese people are on average a lot more white, less uv exposure = less need for darker skin

I dunno if they were white or not, but the variations in skin color are due to natural selection. Sunnier areas closer to the equator lead to darker skin, as more melanin in the skin protects from sunlight. Areas with less sun need less melanin, and so people in those areas have lighter skin.

Or less sun exposure.
