Welcome back to another episode of "I Ramble on About Random Facts From the Logic Police". Today we'll be discussing why Eevee and Pikachu are actually part of a starter trio rather than a starter duo.
All throughout the series, Pokemon games typically came in duos. Originally, Red was going to be released alongside Green, but Green never made it outside of Japan because it would appeal less to Western audiences, thus Red and Blue. Later on, they were remade, this time as FireRed and LeafGreen, but no SeaBlue or something like that because the games never came out in trios. But Yellow is a mystery, because it came out some time after Red and Blue did, and didn't have any pair, which was especially unusual for the series' age at that time. This could have been completely different, however. While Eevee never got a Pokemon Brown in the past, that was before it had become considered a secondary mascot, thus never being a starter until far later on. The counterpart to Yellow could have very easily been Pink, a rumored game that never was, as Clefairy was to be the original mascot before being changed to Pikachu. Clefairy was also going to be Ash's original partner, but once again changed to be Pikachu. There were hints about Pokemon Pink's theoretical existence buried within Pokemon Yellow, meaning that it's very possible that Pink was to be its counterpart that was never released. In the remakes of Yellow, the Let's Go games, Pokemon Pink's existence was once again hinted, seeing as there were three plush Pokemon in the player's room: The two starters, and Clefairy. These plushies have led many to believe Clefairy was the third starter, which could very possibly be true since we never actually see the third starter in-game, and seeing how the rival obtains the Pokemon from said game's counterpart rather than one of the normal starters, it's safe to assume that the third starter wasn't one of the usual starters either. If it's ever revealed by Gamefreak to not be Clefairy though, it's definitely going to turn out a Charmander because Gamefreak just loves giving Charizard literally everything possible.
If you read allat, congrats. You finally reached the end.
