The ancient Egyptians first recognized diabetes around 1500 B.C.E. as a rare condition that caused excessive urination and weight loss. The Ebers Papyrus, written around 1550 B.C.E., is thought to be the first document to mention diabetes mellitus, which refers to the sweet taste of urine in people with the condition. The papyrus also includes remedies for excessive urination, or polyuria; "sweet taste of urine in people with the condition"
