The in-lore explanation is that Clarke got more skilled and confident on his journey to Michigan so he has the balls to fight the Skinned with melee weapons (and yes, even his fists, he can literally throw hands with Skinned now)
My sequel to Clarke's story will include silly things, such as making sure you don't freeze to death, more horror and survival based gameplay, and the ability to have melee fights with Skinned
