single celled organisms decided the best way to thrive and reproduce would be to form an organism that stays in one place, reproduces asexually, and can grow anywhere, as well as feed off of sunlight, modern plants descend from ancient aquatic plants, which come from photosynthesis-capable single-celled organisims.

Now that makes me wonder...

Plant that is taller survive better than plant that is shorter
Taller plant gene slowly become more prominent in gene pool
Eventually lots of plants of that species are tall because being tall gives a survival advantage

why are there still short plants?
is it because they didn't have enough space when trees came to be?

Because that specific species of plant evolved differently to adapt to their specific environment
For example grass
It’s best survival strategy is to just grow in abundance, so it does not particularly need to be tall
