im getting a VM on the mac so that way just in case i can run windows or linux

i had to use one a lot for my computer class. not really that hard to do.

i have watched people use malware/viruses on VMs but due to my fear of getting one i dont plan on doing so

VMs aren't completely immune to viruses. another thing people use them for is testing things theyre working on in case it breaks the computer somehow.

download a disk image for the os you want onto a thumb drive, reboot the computer to the BIOS with the drive installed. it varies from there based on the machine.

i used to have thumb drives but some of the little kids got into them and broke them
