I don't live in California, and I don't know how much money your parents have, but California the cost of living is very expensive relative to the rest of America. The more money you have, the better you home and your environs will be. But this is true anywhere.

California is perceived to be very socially progressive. That would probably appeal to you. But of course there are no absolutes and whether or not you get along with others, such as school mates depends as much on you as the kids you go to class with or in your neighborhood. ( What I mean is, if kids don't like you because you are a whiny jerk, it doesn't always mean that they are homophobic. It could mean you are a whiny selfish jerk. Just saying imo.)
