Inkbelly (Ink at the time) was a kitten, 6-7 moons(months) old when she lived in an abandoned oil rig, she fell into a pool of oil and she swallowed a small amount in the panic. It got in her eyes, messing them up. Numbed her mouth and throat making it hard for her to vocalize. She has a hard time breathing sometimes and has some neurological issues she has to deal with. She vomits up blackish(oil) sometimes, usually on the days its hard to breath. Eventually she was found by her current clan and was taken care of, and given the name Inkbelly. Given her earrings and cloth.

That being said i absolutely adore her.

Yeah that definitely sounds like it would damage the digestive tract, so it likely was for survival
