Imgflip is not a social website, and never will be one.
If Reels or short form videos where made as an feature, imgflip would be counted as a social website/app.

The thing is that imgflip is not an social website or app, its an meme generator, much like ifunny.com.

Why would it not be a social network?

I mean, that’s a good concept tbh.

Thing is, Imgflip wasn’t meant to be a social platform. Originally, it was just a meme generator. With the rise of streams, however, people began to form communities and now it’s more like a social platform. I really doubt they’ll add Reels. It’s a good concept, but yet another thing is that Imgflip is a bootstrapped company. They use whatever ad revenue and paying users to maintain Imgflip. Server hosting is expensive work, and using what little they have to fund more terabytes of data (hence, videos) will be tough for the Imgflip staff.

Welp, hope this helps.

Why not host the videos on the poster's devices?

Well, what if the device breaks? Cloud save is better, and that’s what many sites, including imgflip does. This also good when a user switches to another device, say, a new phone. Hosting images/media locally is more of a hassle, but at least it can be offline.

In that case, Reels would be hosted under a separate domain, maybe something like VidFlip. The servers would run off of Pro memberships with video extension.

The thing is, VERY few people get Pro. While yes, they CAN afford it (mostly), it’s just that they have have VERY strict parents, which never gets it for them. Even if they have their own money, their parents may stop them, which is the case with me. Also, if VidFLIP only has Pro users, then they’d be less popular and in turn generate less revenue. This’ll cause the company to struggle with keeping it afloat — leading to its inevitable demise.

Interesting point. What about gifs with FLAC?

Stick to AAC/MP3, AAC is best, as it reduces the file size while not sacrificing too much on its quality. Thing is, though, is the fact that AAC may not be widely supported.
FLAC and WebM is great, but they may exert a lot of pressure on the servers.

What could also present an issue is a popular video. If it has a certain length, the servers might have a problem. Also, moderators have to sit through possibly 30 seconds of videos to approve something.

Good one, however, instead of approving one by one, why not let it be uploaded and let trustworthy users flag a vid that breaks the code to the mods and then they delete/archive it?
