Making your own sona always starts out with these 3 questions:

1. What is your favorite animal?
2. What's your favorite color?
and lastly, 3. What characteristics describe you best for both you and your sona?

1. reptiles (commonly snakes)
2. dark-ish (or navy) blue
3. errm... i guess nice, but has a dark side-ish sona.

The most commonly-made sonas are based off a person's favorite color and animal, so it should help you get started on the idea of what sona you want to make.

what're some side-notes/backstory i should have?

That's all up to you, you should be the one to give your sona a backstory if you were to give it one. If you can't think of one now, try getting some kind of inspiration and idea of what you want it to be!
