To start, it’s literally only 30 pages.
The story starts with the main character being told by his doctor that his cholesterol is too high, but not immediately dangerous. The doctor uses a metaphor, relating metabolism to a bunch of construction workers. He’s a freelance artist, and has a sudden urge to paint four construction workers on a country road. He names them, and realizes that they’re supposed to be his metabolism workers. He buys a stationary bike to exercise, and paints another painting: the original one, but just the country road, the people nowhere to be seen. He puts it in front of the bike, and begins to ride. He begins to get bored after a few days, so he goes to a bookstore and buys a map. He imagines himself riding down a path of the map, occasionally adding on small objects. He begins to get fully entrapped in the imagination, believing that he’s riding on a country road, not just on the painting, but all around him. One day, he looks to his side, sees a deer pooping, and stops there. The next morning, he notices deer scat painted on the portrait. He doesn’t remember doing that. Things like that continue to happen, until the sun in the painting starts to set, and he begins to feel watched. That night, he has a dream of one of the construction workers’ garages. He sees the worker hacksaw off a shotgun, and blow his brains out. That day, he paints the garage, lacking a body or gun, and names it (Man With Shotgun). When he goes on the stationary bike, he sees headlights behind him, and knows that those are the other workers, trying to kill him for not providing enough work for Carlos, making him kill himself. He tries to disassemble the bike, but can’t. He’s addicted. One day, they catch up to him. He falls off his bike, but instead of leaving the imagination, he stays. He can’t leave. The workers, instead of killing him, beg him to eat more, to give them more work. The economy’s tough, and the guy killed himself because he couldn’t provide for his family, and they’re running out of options, and they need the guy to eat more. He agrees, but asks for a hat of the company they work for.
Months pass, and he completely forgets about all of that. One day, a package comes in the mail, bearing a hat with the company’s logo on it. He doesn’t know why he got sent it, though, but wears it whenever he paints.

This was great, especially for only 30 pages. It’s a must read, and anybody can because of its brevity. Really, look it up and read it. Please.
