Jeez that was a great book. To start, have you ever seen the Simpsons movie? The plot of that is that Springfield gets put under a dome. So, if you’ve seen that, you might have a better idea about the plot. Secondly, the book is upwards of 1100 pages, so there’s a lot to digest. So, let’s get into it.

The first hundred or so pages follow the tragedy of the dome appearing out of nowhere. Planes, cars, and other vehicles crash into an invisible wall. A woman’s hand gets cut clean off. One of the main characters, Dale “Barbie” Barbara, sees a woman in a car offer him a ride, but he declines it. The car leaves right before the dome comes down, and Barbie eventually regrets his choice.

After that, a town politician, Big Jim Rennie, rises into power, creating a ruthless and horrible police force, raping people, killing people, and being all-around jerks. The politicians son, Junior, killed two women, put them into a pantry, and made them his girlfriends. He’s a large part of the new police force.

As time passes on, Big Jim commits more crimes to stay in power, while Barbie and company tries to tell the general public about Jim’a crimes. One of those is making massive amounts of crystal meth. In fact, when the Dome comes down, he takes everybody’s propane in order to make more.

The children under the dome all have small seizures, and during the seizures they have visions. Of those, repeating ones are “pink stars are falling”, “Halloween comes early”, and “everyone’s burning”. The first person to have a seizure is Janice, Rusty (another main character)‘s kid. Rusty’s a doctor, for all intents and purposes.

A colonel of the U.S. army contacts Big Jim, telling him that Barbie needs to become leader, effective immediately. Big Jim puts up a false facade of cooperation, but really sets up Barbie to be arrested. Under the dome is not longer part of the US, according to Big Jim.

As time goes on, air quality under the dome worsens and worsens, until a thick smog covers the entire ceiling, tinting stars and the moon pinkish.

The whole police force go to a woman’s house, and they all rape her, badly injuring her.

Big Jim and Junior frame four murders on Barbie, arresting and beating him in front of Rusty. Of course, Barbie didn’t do them, and Jim and Junior totally did.

As night falls on the third day under the dome, the pink stars fall. Or at least, that’s what it looks like. It’s just a meteor shower, and everybody stops what they’re doing and watches.

The husband of the person whose hand got cut off looks at the sky, after drinking excessive amounts of alcohol. He watches the shower through its entirety, has one last sip, and kills himself.

Junior gets admitted to the hospital for a brain tumor, and Jim gets admitted for his heart failing. Both survive.

Later, the woman who got raped shows up at the hospital because, well, obviously. She sees two of the policemen also in the hospital, so she leaves, sneaks a gun back into the hospital, and kills both, before turning the barrel around and killing herself.

Barbie’s friends create a plan to break him out of prison, and think they have an idea on what created the dome.

That’s a whole lot of plot, but it’s nowhere near as much as there actually is. If you want the entirety of it, read the book yourself.

The book is written in the third person, but also occasionally in the second person. It follows different people, dividing chapters into different parts of the same moment. It’s a really cool style, but seems really tedious to write like that.

I was invested in the story from the start, and became completely entrapped in the plot, reading almost 200 pages a day. So yeah, you could say I liked it. Overall, I give it a 9.9 out of 10. You gotta read this book, especially if you like sci-fi, thrillers, and horror.
