It would be safer if the right to bear arms was restricted to members of a “well trained and well regulated militia” as specified in your constitution.

That would involve regular training, weapons being stored at local secure facilities and removed for training/ceremonial purposes, swearing in or induction procedures, regular drug and alcohol testing, psych evals and a structure to the militia similar to military. So pretty much a reserve defence force.

This would still appeal to patriots wanting to serve their country.

I’d allow tax deductions of time in the militia at a given rate (probably “minimum wage”). I’d also offer that for genuine community service, I don’t live in the USA, and I’d like to see the tax deduction thing here.

I see what you’re saying, but it doesn’t work like that here. The fact that there is no system, no control over the people, and rather it’s the people with the control over the government. Now, I think it’s dangerous when taken to its extreme. Like, look at what happened on January 6, but at the same time the gun advocates, the real ones, here in the states advocate for training. You should know what to do if you have to use your weapon either in self defense or in defense of your rights. The untrained defender is as dangerous as the attacker in my opinion.

Over here, it’s just stupid to do a B&E whilst armed. It just increases the punishment. But if an intruder grabs a weapon whilst in a home or business, they’re not going to leave it there, and will use it to escape if they’re caught.

Well yeah but you’re also less likely to try to rob a place you know is capable of defending itself. Something like 2.5 million lives are saved by defensive use of a firearm in the US, and that’s not counting the amount of times just brandishing it discourages a would be attacker.

Most thieves are opportunistic, like soft targets and don’t want physical confrontations and are trying to fund their habits, and ice and speed addicts offend whilst they’re on a run. But if there are guns in so many homes, wouldn’t they choose to go armed themselves. Would you trust someone on ice with a gun?

No, but it’s illegal to possess or purchase firearms if you’re a habitual user of drugs which is why taking them away won’t help. Bad people will do bad things irrespective of what the law says they are allowed to own.

We had a conservative Prime Minister (closer to Republican) introduce firearms controls. I think a more left leaning leader wouldn’t have been able to do it. The states all had to agree (only6 /states here though).

Yes I remember hearing about that. The same thing won’t work here. Pragmatically speaking, if an American president tried to get rid of the second amendment somehow there would be a second civil war. So while you could argue all day about whether or not the problem is the guns or the people, they aren’t the answer to the problem. They can’t be.
