Firstly, Jesus didnt tell anyone he could do it—he just did it.
Miracles were and still are necessary for heathen or pagan people to believe the message of the gospel when they are already believing another religion. I shake my head at missionaries nowadays who offer nothing but pharmaceutical drugs (witchcraft) to heal people living in the jungle or wilderness.
Of course Jesus and the disciples did miracles, and so can the devil and his disciples. If you look at magicians nowadays they are always trying to (and succeeding at times) to match the miracles of Jesus in an attempt to draw people away from the true faith. And it works.
If Im correct I saw someone turn water into wine, and produce fish from a bucket, walk through walls, etc... and eventhough some of their tricks are just phony, when asked about how they perform some of their incredible acts, all of them claim to have an (unholy) spirit helping them.
