Well it really depends on the engine
I only have experience with Godot and Gamemaker Studio.

It's not really easy to explain it all, but the main idea is to make game development more efficient and somewhat easier.
You still have to add code to sprites and objects and whatnot

But it’s just your own code of the game functions and that makes it unique, right?

So you have to use the game engine's custom code or C++.
But yes, if you code it in a certain way to have its own unique game mechanic, then yeah
