basically
for every crystal star you get (you get one after each chapter) you unlock a special move, each one costing a certain amount of those colorful circles at the top of the screen
they're super powerful, very optimal boss-fighting attacks, and i beat this guy without using a single one

in fact, i only used two moves over and over the entire fight (one move for Mario and one move for Vivian) (not counting hiding in the shadows to avoid Megabreath)
