They were a marine biologist studying Sea Spiders when they got bitten by a radioactive one, which gave them the regular Spider Man powers (webs and Spider Sense), and the ability to breathe underwater (no, sea spiders are not technically spiders, but they are arachnids so close enough). The reason their mask has the two regular eyes and the smaller ones (you can only see one on the picture but there’s one on each side) is because sea spiders can have four to six eyes and without the mask they have glasses. They do not actually have four eyes though.
