I use the Panasonic Lumix FZ80 that I received for Christmas last year to take my photos.

So, what exactly does this device do?

It allows for a much wider flash coverage than the pop-up flash in my camera and therefore allows me to get much better lighting pics on basically anything when it's too dark or I just need more light.

Pretty sure that it's an advanced flashlight.

Slave mode is basically using the flash wirelessly. You need a transmitter that goes on your camera and acts as the "master unit" though, and I don't have one at the moment so I'm not able to use it.
