the way i see it they’re doing themselves a favor. the way humans are destroying the planet, they must have noticed if they have seen. they wouldn’t want to make some long term deal only for us to end up breathing in toxic fumes.
The presumption is that if intelligent aliens evolved it follows a bell curve where some are ahead of us and some are behind us so the ahead of us should contact us. But that makes a lot of assumptions and what you propose is consistent with the observation…
