For anyone looking for context, my country’s Air Force (RNZAF) is replacing its P-3k2 Orion maritime patrol aircraft with the new Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, which means that one of our Air Force bases is being shut down, because the runway that they share with the nearby airport is too short to support the P-8 Poseidon aircraft, whereas the P-3k2s had no problem with the short runway, often coming in low on fuel from 20+ hour patrol missions. This necessitates the construction of a new base to support the P-8 Poseidon aircraft as they patrol the largest search & rescue area in the world.
