Originally, Sonic 3 was supposed to be on one cartridge, but because of a deadline for a sponsorship with McDonald's and releasing the game during the Groundhog day (Called as Hegehog Day for the game's release) in February 2, 1994. Sonic and Knuckles, the second part was release 8 months later, during October 1994.

At least they made it work and it’s still a good game
