Here's a way I work around both if you're interested:
An alternative to vertical half slabs I use is trap doors. I like to use them for thin walls and special fence designs. And for furniture it's a good idea to just embrace what we have and what villagers have, like furnaces in the kitchen or stairs as chairs. But if you don't want to do that, a trick I use to make chairs is I place a vertical bamboo slab on top of scaffolding. It's helped me out a lot, hope this helps <3
