Bahhahaha
I had a great uncle who was in wwii (my grandpa was as well). But his brother (the great uncle) was a prisoner of war at Changhi (Edward “Weary” Dunlop was the CO of the prisoners and it’s considered a very big deal here).
Anyway the great uncle had been a baker before enlisting. So he was a cook in the camp/s (Changhi was actually a group of camps). He had to cook the meals for the Officers of the capturers (the enemy, Japanese Imperial forces). When a pow got dysentery, they had to make a special contribution towards the meals for their captors. The great uncle had to mix this in with the meals.
Hence the saying, eat s**t and die (ok, that part I made up). The rest is accepted oral history in my family, and there are similar stories of life as POWs.
