Choose Your Difficulty (this will determine certain things such as checkpoints and lives [how many times you can die before having to restart]):
> Poor Child = Five companions, infinite lives, and checkpoints are everywhere. You won't face hostile entities. However, the route ends after Act 1.
> Easy = Four companions, 20 lives, and checkpoints every 10 rooms. However, the game takes a bit longer to complete.
> Normal = Three companions, 10 lives, and checkpoints every 25 rooms. Entities are hostile, others aren't.
> Hard = One companion, 5 lives, and checkpoints every 75 rooms. Entities are hostile.
> NIGHTMARE = No companions, you only have one life, and NO CHECKPOINTS. Don't worry, if you fall here, you can choose another difficulty from the get-go.
