Even then to make it a single term you’d need to put parentheses around it. 6 divided by (2*(1+2)) would yield 1 certainly. But there is no second set of parentheses. Former math professor speaking here. This phrase translates to “6 divided by 2 times ( the sum of 1 and 2)”. PEMDAS reduces this first to “6 divided by 2 times 3” by doing the parentheses first. The E step does not apply since there are no exponents (other than the understood and implicit 1 everywhere). Then the MD step applies, which goes left to right so the phrase becomes “3 times 3”, which is 9.
