Rundown: two girls like superheroes, they make a superhero that is Jewish and then they like it. But only after seeing a movie with a Jewish stereotype.
Susanna and Jessica are best friends who love superheroes. They go to see a new movie about a hero who fights a villain with a big nose, a Yiddish accent, and a greed for money. Susanna and Jessica are both Jewish, and they feel offended by the movie’s stereotypes. They walk out of the theater, feeling angry and disappointed. On their way out, they bump into a boy who was also watching the movie. He asks them what they thought of it, and they tell him they hated it. He says they are being too sensitive, and that it was just a fun movie. Susanna and Jessica roll their eyes and walk away. Jessica takes out her phone and writes an email to the movie studio, complaining about the problematic imagery. She sends it and gets an instant reply, but it’s just an advertisement for the movie’s merchandise. Susanna tells Jessica that they probably didn’t even read her email, and that it was a waste of time. Susanna then shows Jessica her sketchbook, where she has drawn her own superhero character, Lady Crystal. Lady Crystal is a 16 year old girl who can control ice and snow with her mind. She is also Jewish, and proud of her heritage. Jessica loves the idea, and suggests that they write stories about Lady Crystal together. They go to Susanna’s house, where they create a comic book series about Lady Crystal’s adventures. They share their comics with their classmates and teachers, who are impressed by their creativity and talent. Susanna and Jessica feel happy and empowered by their own superhero.
