The movie begins with two witches named Matalmaya and Evergreen knocking on the door of Matalmaya’s one year younger brother: a wizard named Gargamel. Gargamel, Matalmaya, and Evergreen live in an isolated enchanted forest, the same one that Smurf Village is located in, as all of their parents wanted to get away from oppression. Matalmaya and Evergreen tell Gargamel they are going to gather supplies and some are in dangerous places, and they have a distress signal that Gargamel will get in case they need help. One place they are arriving to is Smurf Village. Smurfs, the inhabitants, are evil small blue creatures who lock up certain groups of people. Matalmaya and Evergreen walk towards the village ready to fight, but the Smurfs end up capturing the two and locking them in a large, cavernous underground room. They manage to send the distress signal though. Gargamel gets it, and sets off with his pet cat Azrael to save them. He narrowly manages to save the two and escape. The next day, he and Azrael arrive at Smurf Village to confront the Smurfs. After getting into an argument with Papa Smurf, with Gargamel saying the Smurfs can’t treat people the way they do, Gargamel and Azrael begin fighting the Smurfs. The next day, Gargamel realizes the Smurfs followed him home, and they start attacking his house. Gargamel and Azrael start fighting them with the aid of Matalmaya and Evergreen. After that, Gargamel became archenemies with the Smurfs, and Gargamel realizes that the Smurfs have terrible plans all the time. Gargamel once tried to fight fire with fire by making a good Smurf-like creature he called Shira. But the Smurfs captured her and turned her into Smurfette. One day, Gargamel decided to launch an attack on the night of a blue moon. Matalmaya comes to his house, and Gargamel tells her about his plan. He's managed to master a spell that attracts their magical chain shooters to him, and since they don't have anything that can effectively hurt him, they'll run. After Gargamel leaves with Azrael, Matalmaya decides to help him without telling him (she's like that). She gets Evergreen and sets off to Smurf village. Meanwhile, at Smurf Village, Gargamel masters the spell, and all the Smurfs run. When the blue moon opens the portal at the falls, and Gargamel chases Papa, Smurfette, Clumsy, Gutsy, Brainy, and Grouchy in, he feels as if the Smurfs got their karma. Then Matalmaya and Evergreen arrive. Gargamel says he thinks he did a good job, but Evergreen (the bookworm) says that the portal Gargamel chased those 6 Smurfs in is a perfectly good world that the Smurfs will ruin, he realizes what he did and sets off to follow them in with Azrael. Matalmaya and Evergreen insist they come along, and Gargamel lets them. Gargamel, Azrael, Matalmaya, and Evergreen land into Central Park in Manhattan. They spot the Smurfs (the Smurfs don't see them) and follow them to an apartment building: the home of Patrick and Grace Winslow, a married couple who are expecting their first child. Patrick and Grace spot the Smurfs, and the Smurfs start telling a self-serving memory to them that makes them look like the good guys, so Patrick and Grace take their side. Gargamel and the others saw this, and it dissapointed them. Gargamel and the others sleep in Central Park, talking about what to do. Gargamel tells them that Patrick and Grace would be good ways to track the Smurfs down, and they plan to eventually inform them of the Smurfs true intentions. The next day, the Smurfs follow Patrick to his work at Anjelou Cosmetics to look for a telescope. Gargamel and the others notice Patrick enter the mall where it is located, see a glimpse of Smurfs, and follow him in. While in, Gargamel and the others notice Anjelou Cosmetics and locate Patrick. Gargamel attempts to attack the Smurfs, and the Smurfs attempt to steal Gargamel's bag (the chain shooters are in Gargamel's bag). They run inside FAO Shwarz, a toy store, and Patrick and Grace aid the Smurfs and notice Gargamel and Azrael, but don't notice Matalmaya and Evergreen as much. Everybody started looking at Gargamel and the others in a mistrustful way, which just reminded Gargamel of how much he is hated and misjudged by the Smurfs, and now the Winslow couple. Gargamel and the others need to get home as well as stop the Smurfs, but the Smurfs want to get home too. The trio calculates the time and look in a bookstore for ways to stop the Smurfs and get home. While Gargamel looks for information, Matalmaya and Evergreen find a dragon wand and charge it with their magic, as Evergreen claims it could be useful. Then Matalmaya and Evergreen remember about Patrick and Grace and decide to find them. They find Patrick and Grace near their apartment, and Matalmaya and Evergreen let Patrick and Grace know about the Smurfs' true intentions. Patrick and Grace don't believe them at first, but they say the Smurfs will admit the terrible things they've done because they think it's right. Sure enough, when Patrick and Grace talk to the Smurfs about it, they do. Patrick and Grace realize what they have done and switch sides, but the Smurfs manage to stall them by using objects around the place, and set off towards the same bookstore Gargamel is in. Gargamel finds a book with everything he needs and puts it in his bag. The Smurfs manage to find Gargamel in the bookstore. They steal his bag, retrieve their chain shooters, and Gargamel and Azrael are captured. The Smurfs see the book Gargamel took and decide to use it to get home. Patrick and Grace arrive at the bookstore to confront the Smurfs, but they are captured as well. Gargamel, Azrael, Patrick, and Grace are locked in a room in the bookstore, and the Smurfs tell them that once they manage to open the portal to their world, they will bring the caprtives back into their world. They also said they see many people in Patrick and Grace's world they could take back to their world and lock up. Patrick and Grace apologize to Gargamel, and they bond with him in captivity. Meanwhile, Matalmaya and Evergreen walked back to the bookstore at a somewhat slow pace, as they believed they weren't in too big of a rush, and when they arrived at the bookstore, they didn't see Gargamel. They then heard sounds coming from the room and recognized the voices. They blew the door open with the dragon wand and rescued Gargamel, Azrael, Patrick, and Grace. Patrick and Grace agree to help Gargamel and the others defeat the Smurfs. Gargamel and his allies go to stop the Smurfs. When they arrive, the Smurfs had already opened a portal, and it had summoned a Smurf army. A fight ensues, where Gargamel retrieves his bag. They use all they can to fight the Smurfs, and eventually manage to fling them away. Gargamel, Matalmaya, and Evergreen say goodbye to Patrick and Grace as they go through the portal that the Smurfs opened. Gargamel, Matalmaya, and Evergreen move to a village, having been inspired to socialize more, and society has gotten better, so they experienced less oppression than their parents. Meanwhile, Patrick and Grace name their new son Lior, as it was a suggested name by Gargamel. A post-credits scene shows the Smurfs returning to their world and back to Smurf Village but have no idea where Gargamel went.
