i think its because spanish (and french) uses female and male pronouns for anything, even objects, food ect.

Gendered nouns are easy. "Ensalada" ends with "a" with means it's feminine. Pendejo" ends with "o" sp it's masculine. The only exception I know of is "agua" which is actually masculine
