I can tell you why and I'm not saying this to be rude or anything, it's because of them getting a bad reputation from zoophiles and some people think that all furries are zoo's, another reason is because they dress up as animals

While I do support the furry fandom, I must say that while they hate zoophiles, they don't do anything as a whole to keep the zoo's away, making them a huge shelter for those kinds of people. Also there's the whole nsfw side that was brashly stumbled upon and made a LOT of people uncomfortable. Society as a whole really isn't good at taking things in their stride and continuing on.
To sum up: Furries aren't bad, just misrepresented, but they haven't done much to discharge the discomfort and suspiciousness of zoophilia that surrounds them.
