Not only is it dangerous for a cat to be outside, even a well fed cat will hunt native wildlife. Keeping cats inside is especially important right now, with young birds being particularly vulnerable.

Thats why I'm conflicted about getting a cat, I love birds, but I love cats too and it seems almost cruel to keep a cat indoors

Honestly every indoor cat I’ve ever seen is alright with staying inside.
