Let’s say each one is a 6 inch by 6 inch square

Cutting it horizontally/vertically will make it 6x3/3x6. The area of it is 18 square inches.

Cutting it diagonally will make it a triangle with a height of 6 inches and a base of 6 inches. Doing the math, we end up with - guess what - 18 square inches.
