IN 1774, BRITAIN’S KING GEORGE III LED EFFORTS TO PASS THE “COERCIVE ACTS” AS PUNISHMENT. AMONG OTHER THINGS, THESE ACTS SHUT DOWN BOSTON HARBOR UNTIL THE TEA COMPANY WAS REIMBURSED, HALTED FREE ELECTIONS IN MASSACHUSETTS AND MANDATED THAT COLONISTS HOUSE BRITISH TROOPS WHENEVER IT WAS DEMANDED OF THEM. THIS FANNED THE FLAMES OF INDEPENDENCE FROM BRITISH RULE AND LED TO THE START OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR ON APRIL 19, 1775, WHICH EXACTED A HEAVY TOLL, WITH 6,800 AMERICANS DYING IN ACTION AND 6,100 MORE BEING WOUNDED.
