Please explain this joke

That’s the most common example of what we call “dad jokes” The reason you don’t understand them is because you have no dad

And, for the record, I do have a dad. He just has a wayyyyyy better sense of humor than this.

yeah, mine tells great jokes, like: "What bleeds and meows? Half a cat." and "Two cannibals are at a circus. One says "this clown tastes funny to you?"

I remember once at the San Diego zoo, my family went on this tour thing we’re there were asses (the donkey) along the trail. My dad and I started laughing together. My mom noticed and asked
“What are you doing” or something along those lines, I don’t remember exactly. However, I very distinctly remember my dad’s reply,
He said “teaching our daughter ass jokes”
To this day, it’s still among my favorite memories
