Really interesting story this!
Airbus was receiving no sales for the a300, but in an incredibly risky business move that could have bankrupted airbus, they leased a dozen a300s to eastern for free. Literally no cost for eastern whatsoever. It paid off, and eastern ended up loving the a300, later becoming the biggest customer for the a300, which went on to become an international success.
