Thanks to my friend, I now get it

when I was just a boy I thought that police we're immune to laws and could commit crimes legally.

later in life I found out that wasn't the case.

and then even later I found out it was!

Yes there's very little black and white. It's all Grey, often the best deeds are done with impure motives, and the worst deeds often have extenuating circumstances.
