They initially joined the war to attack Japan, not Germany, as Japan attacked the US on pearl harbor, as Germany (I daresay) was mainly a speed bump (especially when the soviet union was closing in on the eastern front) as Japan was losing islands to the US and as the US was preparing the nukes to drop on Japan. As conclusion, the US had one particular target at the start, then at the end, targeted both Germany and Japan
